Northumberland Monitor Farm: Strategies to improve farm resilience
One of the key objectives for Beef & Lamb Monitor Farmers, G Sordy & Sons, is to build farm resilience. To do this they are working to reduce costs, without compromising animal performance.
With over 4500 lambs, worm control is a significant cost for the farm. Working with their vet, the Sordy family are aiming to implement targeted selective treatment, where lambs are selected for treatment on an individual, rather than group basis. This has the potential to cut labour and medicine costs, whilst also reducing the risk of anthelmintic resistance.
During this event we will discuss:
- What anthelmintic resistance is
- How to reduce the risk of resistance on your farm
- Introduction to targeted selective treatment (TST)
- Plans for implementation of TST at Alnham Farm
To build resilience Harry has also established some herbal ley swards. These will bring a number of benefits including improved soil structure and health as well as increased drought resistance. In addition, the legume species within the herbal ley mix are nitrogen fixers, helping to reduce fertiliser inputs. During the meeting we will visit the herbal leys and discuss management to ensure good beef and sheep performance whilst grazing.
Lunch and refreshment will be provided, please let us know of any specific dietary requirements.
