Shropshire Beef & Lamb Strategic Farm: Grazing management – sheep, cows & carbon
Due to coronavirus restrictions, two sessions will run (10.30am – 1pm and 2pm – 4.30pm) limited to 30 people each time. Please book onto your preferred session:
Join us for this on-farm event with our 2019 Shropshire Strategic Farmer, Neil Brown. Since Neil joined the Farm Excellence network two years ago, one of his key focus areas has been to improve his grazing management. During this event we will be accompanied on a farm walk by Marc Jones, an independent grassland specialist. Marc will discuss some of the changes Neil has made, including how putting more of a focus on his Autumn closing plans has helped him to prepare for better grazing management the following Spring. Marc will also explain how and why Neil has started to rotationally graze his cattle and sheep.
Over the winter, Neil completed a carbon audit of his business. At this meeting we will discuss some of the outcomes of this audit and how they could be built into his business to improve his profitability whilst reducing the farm’s impact on the environment. Within this we’ll touch on how Neil has implemented some of these improvements through accessing mid-tier stewardship options including a new covered muck store and reseeding with a GS4 seed mix.
The event will cover topics including:
-
How good grazing management, namely planning for Autumn closing, can benefit the business and the environment
-
How carbon auditing can be implemented practically in a farm business
-
Using data to make informed decisions
Refreshments will not be provided on this occasion.
