UK beef self-sufficiency and impacts of Brexit

In 2019, the UK was 86% self-sufficient for Beef. This was an increase of 6% on the previous year due to a combination of increased production and reduced consumption.

Test silage crude protein

As grass growth caught up around the country, it helped fill many clamps with quality grass silage. Yet it’s still important to get it analysed before planning this winter’s rations. Not only could you save money on bought-in protein feeds but also pick up potentially high nitrate levels, which could lead to health or production issues later on if they aren’t dealt with.

A year of small peaks and many troughs

As we look back over the 2020 grazing season, the total average grass production across AHDB Forage For Knowledge (FFK) farms this year was approximately 1.5 t DM/ha below the 2019 average, with the FFK farms producing, on average, 12.7 t DM/ha – the lowest average reported through FFK since 2014.

In 2019, the UK was 109% self-sufficient for lamb, up by nearly 10% on the previous year. This increase was due to both a reduction in lamb consumption in the UK year-on-year, and an increase in domestic production.
