New maximum residue levels for chlorate proposed

Friday, 1 February 2019

The European Commission has set out its proposal for new chlorine maximum residue levels (MRLs) for edible fresh produce.

The commission has indicated that it may use responses and any new data to tweak the proposed MRLs before they become statutory. The industry has until 18 February 2019 to respond to the consultation.

You may need to review how you disinfect waters if you are currently using chlorine compounds and getting resides above the new proposed levels.

You can find out more about the consultation and submit your feedback on the European Commission’s food safety regulation report page.

We are also happy to collate your responses and submit on your behalf to the Health and Safety Directive. If you’d like to share your thoughts on the proposals, please contact grace.choto@ahdb.org.uk.
