We've published a new report examining the economic and operational implications of moving away from CO₂ stunning in the UK pig processing sector.

The report, produced by Europe Economics, brings together independent analysis to support informed discussion on a complex and sensitive issue. It draws on economic, operational and welfare considerations across commercial processing systems.

While the work explores potential alternatives to CO₂ stunning, a consistent finding throughout the analysis is that any transition would need to be carefully planned and managed to avoid unintended consequences for both animal welfare and staff safety.

The report highlights that, while concerns about CO₂ stunning are well recognised, current alternatives also present challenges when considered in commercial, real‑world settings.

The analysis also identifies important health and safety considerations.

Introducing argon into commercial abattoirs would bring additional occupational safety risks for staff working around stunning systems and would require careful assessment, infrastructure changes and comprehensive workforce training before any deployment at scale.

Taken together, the findings do not suggest that change should be resisted. Rather, they underline the importance of an evidence‑led, properly resourced and realistic approach to any future transition, ensuring that decisions deliver genuine welfare benefits rather than unintended setbacks.

In practice, the report concludes that this would require fully funded, UK‑based trials at commercial scale, alongside sufficient lead‑in time for evaluation, workforce preparation and safe implementation across the processing sector.
