Shropshire B&L Strategic Farm: Managing worm burdens to optimise lamb performance
Effective worm control is vital to optimise lamb growth rates and for sustainable sheep farming. Understanding what anthelmintic resistance is and what it means in practice and identifying the wormer products that work best on your farm will enable farmers to make decisions about which products to use at certain times of year.
AHDB Strategic Farmer Neil Brown is utilising his worm control plan to ensure the farm’s lamb growth rates are optimised, whilst reducing the risk of developing anthelmintic resistance. Neil has been taking routine faecal egg counts via FECPAKG2 to determine the need to treat, ensuring wormers are only used at the right time and when necessary.
At this on-farm event we will be joined by some expert speakers including Phillipa Page a specialist sheep vet and consultant for Flock Health Ltd, Fiona Hutchings Ruminant Technical Manager and Vet from Elanco, and Eurion Thomas Operations Manager from Techion.
What will be discussed?
- How and why to faecal egg count with demonstration on the FECPAKG2
- What anthelmintic resistance is and how it is caused
- How to understand if you have anthelmintic resistance
- Developing an effective worm control plan – choosing the right product at the right time and targeting the right sheep
- Grazing and pasture management to reduce the need for wormers
Lunch and refreshments will be served so please advise us of any special dietary requirements.
