Wednesday, 1 December 2021

The results of the Welsh June survey are now available. The number of sheep has increased while the pig herd has contracted. Meanwhile, the cattle herd has remained relatively static.

Sheep

The total number of sheep in Wales recovered from the level recorded last year to be up 5% on-the-year and a similar total to in 2018 and 2019. The number of lambs increased 3%, to 4.65 million head. This reflects the trend recorded in Scotland but is a contrast to the England results.

Cattle

The number of cattle increased marginally to 1.13 million head. Within this two of the most significant changes were a decrease in both beef and dairy females over 2 without offspring. The number of dairy females under one increased 10%.

Pigs

Wales is a very small producer of pork and overall, the herd contracted 4%.
