Outwintering options for sheep

Past Event

6:00pm - 7:00pm

Join AHDB and Marc Jones, Agricultural Consultant for a webinar on outwintering sheep.

The webinar will be suitable for sheep farmers who are preparing to outwinter their sheep this winter. There will be guidance on how to determine the suitability of your fields and decide which crop is most suitable for your system.

Outwintering has the potential to reduce the winter feed bill through optimising the use of forages. There is also the potential to increase flock size or free up housing for other stock on farm. However, out-wintering needs proper planning and preparation to meet the nutrient and welfare requirements of stock – we will discuss the many factors to consider to make a success of outwintering.

The webinar will cover:

  • Cost comparisons of outwintering compared with housing
  • Field selection and environmental considerations
  • The range of crops available
  • How to calculate feed requirements
  • Grazing management

The webinar will last approximately 35 minutes, with time for questions at the end.

If you can’t make the webinar, please still register, as it will be recorded and sent to you afterwards to watch in your own time.
