Imports

The latest trade data from HMRC shows that the UK imported 20,300 tonnes of fresh and frozen beef in November, relatively unchanged (+0.5%) from the same month in 2019. Shipments from the Netherlands and Poland declined year-on-year, while imports from other countries including Germany, Ireland, Austria and Spain increased.

From January-November (inclusive), the UK imported 219,400 tonnes of fresh and frozen beef, 3% less than the same period in 2019. Imports from Ireland were steady on the year for the period; the majority of the decline was due to lower shipments from the Netherlands and South America.

Exports

During November, UK exports of fresh and frozen beef fell by 28% (3,600 tonnes) year-on-year to 9,300 tonnes. The largest declines came in shipments to the Netherlands, which accounted for around 60% of the overall fall. There was some growth in shipments to non-EU destinations, however this was not enough to outweigh the other declines. It is worth noting that exports in 2019 were elevated compared to the five-year average.

From January-November (inclusive), the UK exported 105,700 tonnes of fresh and frozen beef, down 16% (20,000 tonnes) year-on-year. Shipments to the EU declined by 23%, with the majority of the decline in volumes to the Netherlands. Shipments to other EU countries also declined, including Ireland, France and Italy. Exports to non-EU countries rose by 16%, with notable growth in shipments to Japan and Canada.
