Old season lamb prices in the ring nudged up in the latest week, while deadweight prices slipped.

In the week ending 31 March, the liveweight GB OSL SQQ averaged 289.0p/kg, up 6.2p on the week before. The measure is now nearly 87p above where it was this time last year, with trade buoyed by the upcoming Easter period.

Total throughputs at GB auction marts were estimated at 103,800 head for the week, up 1% on the week before. Rising numbers of new season lambs offset a 1% decline in OSL numbers, however OSLs still accounted for 95% of total estimated throughputs.

On the deadweight front, the GB OSL SQQ price slipped for the first time since the end of January, down 12p to average 626.5p/kg in the week ending 27 March. Despite the slip, the measure is 110p above where it was this time last year.

Estimated slaughter for the week stood at 178,000 head, down 5% on the week before and down 11% from the same week a year ago. For the year-to-date, estimated slaughter is down 10% compared to last year.

Cull ewes averaged £95.81/head liveweight, down 61p on the week.
