Prime cattle prices have recorded marginal declines in the latest week. During the week ending 11 September the GB all prime average cattle price slipped 0.8p week-on-week, to 409.6p/kg. Despite this decline the measure stands 40.6p above year earlier levels.

Weekly price movements (w/e 11 Sep):

  • Steers (overall): 410.5p/kg down -1.3p
  • Heifers (overall): 410.1p/kg down -0.3p
  • Young bulls (overall): 400.6p/kg up 0.5p

Estimated prime kill for the week stood at 29,800 head, which is on the lower end of what is typical. Reports of staff shortages and the knock-on effect on kill capacity continue.

In the latest week the GB overall average cow price slipped 2.8p, to 286.8p/kg. Estimated kill was 10,900 head. At this time of year we usually start to see cow kill pick up ahead of the winter housing period so it remains to be seen how price, processor demand and cow availability balance. Typically as more culls come forwards, prices come under pressure.
