Wednesday, 6 January 2021
GB deadweight cattle prices edged up into the New Year.
In the week ending 26 December, the GB deadweight all-prime price rose 3.9p on the week to 370.5p/kg. It then rose by another 0.6p to average 371.1p/kg in the week ending 2 January. The measure for the latest week is now 40p above the same price last year.
Prime throughputs for the week ending 26 December totalled 22,100 head (+6,300 head yoy), and for the week ending 2 January totalled 21,800 head (-1,900 head yoy). Both weeks were shortened due to the festive bank holidays. The higher throughput in the first week was likely due to the additional Boxing Day bank holiday during the week last year.
Weekly prime cattle price movement for w/e 2 January:
- Overall steers: 371.0p/kg -0.8p
- Overall heifers: 372.5p/kg +1.7p
- Overall young bulls: 355.1p/kg +8.0p
The GB deadweight average cull cow price rose 2.0p in the week ending 26 December to 225.4p/kg, and rose by a further 11.1p in the week ending 2 January to average 236.5p/kg.
Cow throughputs totalled 5,200 head in the week ending 26 December (+2,000 head yoy) and 5,100 head in the week ending 2 January (-2,000 head yoy). Again, throughput over the Christmas week was likely due to having an extra kill day in the week this year.
