Beefing up the UK diet – Why education matters more than ever

Wednesday, 22 April 2026

We know British beef can play an important role in a healthy, sustainable UK diet. At a time when conversations about food are becoming increasingly complex, Kate Arthur explains why the way we tell our industry’s story matters more than ever.

This year’s National Beef Association (NBA) Beef Expo panel discussion ‘Beefing up the UK diet – why education matters more than ever’ is timely. It’s an opportunity for us – producers, processors, retailers and educators – to champion the real value of beef and engage the next generation with confidence.

Communicating health benefits

Telling our story effectively starts with clarity. Consumers are hearing mixed messages about red meat, but the evidence shows that lean, unprocessed red meat can play a positive part in a balanced, plant‑rich diet.

It’s nutrient-dense, providing high‑quality protein, iron, zinc and vitamin B12 – nutrients many young people, particularly teenage girls and women of reproductive age, currently struggle to get enough of.

By communicating these facts simply and consistently, we help people make informed food choices rather than feel overwhelmed by conflicting advice.

Educating young people

Education in schools, colleges and hospitality training has an enormous role to play. Food literacy isn’t just about cooking – it’s about understanding nutrition, sustainability and where food comes from.

Many messages around diet and sustainability are confusing or overly simplified. Offering young people balanced, evidence‑based information – including how British beef is produced, its environmental footprint in a UK context and how it fits into a sustainable diet – helps build lifelong confidence in their food choices.

Practical sessions, farm visits, classroom resources and guest speakers all bring food systems to life in a relatable way. Through our ‘Food – a fact of life’ programme, developed with the British Nutrition Foundation, we support thousands of teachers with free, curriculum-linked resources.

Farmers and industry professionals can make a real difference here. Opening farm gates for school visits, partnering with colleges, volunteering for career days or simply sharing farming stories online are all powerful ways to bring the journey from field to fork to life. Young people are hugely curious about how their food is produced; authenticity and openness go a long way.

Looking ahead, there’s a big opportunity for British beef to remain a valued part of the UK diet by continuing to focus on nutrition, animal welfare, environmental stewardship and transparency.

By working together and putting education at the heart of our approach, we can ensure British beef remains a trusted, nutritious and sustainable choice for generations to come.
