Yet another strong week of gains for prime cattle prices

Wednesday, 19 August 2020

By Rebecca Wright

In the week ended 15 August, British prime cattle prices once again recorded some strong gains. The GB all prime average measure gained 2.6p week-on-week, to 371.5p/kg.

Once again industry reports have suggested supply of cattle is below processor demand. While consumers may be taking advantage of the ‘eat out to help out’ government scheme during August, the vast majority if not all of the cattle currently being killed will be consumed after the scheme ends. In Ireland prices have recorded some declines, but this is unlikely to add pressure to British prices, as kill capacity is being reduced due to COVID-19 factory closures in Ireland.

Estimated prime kill for the week totaled 31,500 head, a similar number to last week and almost 1,000 head up on the same week last year.

GB deadweight prime cattle price movements (w/e 15 August):

  • Steers (overall): 371.6p/kg up 2.3p
  • Steers (R4L): 384.3p/kg up 2.3p
  • Heifers (overall): 372.9p/kg up 3.0p
  • Young bulls (overall): 366.4p/kg up 2.6p

Meanwhile cow prices slipped slightly. The GB overall cow price lost 1.5p on-the-week to 265.3p/kg. Although a week-on-week decline, prices are still strong and stand almost 40p above the five year average. Estimated cow kill was slightly up week-on-week, to 11,100 head.
