UK sheep meat production slips during August

By Rebecca Wright

During August UK sheep meat production totalled 27,300 tonnes, down 6% (1,600 tonnes) year-on-year, according to Defra data. Much of the decline can be attributed to Eid-al-Adha falling in July this year rather than August as it did last year. Abattoir returns to the Defra slaughter survey have remained low again this month which may impact on the kill spilt between lambs and ewes.

Included in the latest data release by Defra are some revisions to previous months published lamb kill. The effect of this is that between May and July almost 90,000 more lambs were killed than originally thought. Ewe kill was revised upwards by 13,300 head.
