UK sheep meat production eases for July

From the latest Defra data, the UK produced 22,300 tonnes of sheep meat for the month of July, a decrease of 8% (2,000 tonnes) year on year.

UK average lamb kill totalled 989,100 head, down -9% on July 2021 throughput. Lambs were 200g lighter on average than in June, with the average dressed carcase weights at 19.6kg. This was in line with weights seen in July last year.

Ewe kill totalled 100,400 head for July, up 12% on June, but a decrease on numbers in July 2021 of 9% (10,500 head).

Year-to-date clean sheep slaughter stood at 6.63 million head, 5% up on the same point last year. With carcase weights 1% higher on average over the period, this has boosted total sheep meat production to 144,600 tonnes, a 7% increase on the year.
