UK lamb and ewe kill still at reduced levels

By Rebecca Wright

Lamb and ewe kill both once again recorded large year-on-year declines during June, according to Defra data. Lamb kill stood at 881,000 head for the month down 11% on the year. A drop in reported kill was not unexpected as GB auction market throughputs were exceptionally low during the final week of the month.

Ewe kill during June stood at 81,000 head, down 27%. Although this continues the trend recorded over the past 12 months, it is once again in conflict with throughputs at GB auction markets where numbers have continued to be buoyant.

Total sheep meat production stood at 19,800 tonnes, down 12%.

In the first six months of the year 5.1 million lambs have come forwards, 491,000 head fewer than in the same period of 2020. The number of ewes has also reduced to 521,600 head, down 165,000 head.

At the end of July AHDB will be releasing its next agri-market outlook which will take a look at what production could be for the rest of 2021 and into 2022. The outlook will explore what the exceptionally low ewe kill numbers reported could mean for the size of the upcoming ewe breeding flock.
