Milk production continues behind last year in May

Thursday, 16 June 2022

GB milk production for the peak month of May totalled 1,139 million litres, 1.5% behind May 2021, based on the latest figures from our daily deliveries survey.

The latest data[1] now indicates that GB milk production peaked at 37.54m litres/day on 6 May, with the 7-day rolling average peaking at 37.35m litres/day on 8 May. Although we published an article about the peak a couple of weeks ago, we’ve revised the data since then. This has changed the story slightly, from production being below forecast to on forecast, and also makes the peak a bit higher than previously reported.

So, production for the month of May overall was in line with our baseline forecast of 1,140m litres, and in the latest figures production is running roughly in line with the forecast. We will be updating our baseline forecast later this month.

However, high inputs costs continue, and we are unlikely to see the full impact of these until later in the year. Therefore, there is still the potential to see production fall further, in line with one of our forecast scenarios, as the season progresses. How rapidly we fall from the peak will be a key watch point over the coming months.
