Increase in lamb kill drives production up during June

By Rebecca Wright

UK lamb kill somewhat bounced back during June, having been very low during April and May. During June, 987,800 lambs were killed, up 9% (80,400 head) year-on-year and 29% month-on-month according to Defra data. However, this rise does not offset the previous declines. Also, note that the rise compared to last year will be influenced by two additional weekdays in June 2020 compared with June 2019.

Industry reports suggest demand from France for imports increased during the month, which supported volumes as well as prices. Average lamb carcase weights were marginally down compared with both the previous month and a year earlier.

Ewe kill was steady on-the-year, at 110,200 head. This is a recovery from a low kill in May. Carcase weights were nearly a kilo lower than both last month and June 2019, at 27.6kg.

Overall, UK sheep meat production for June totalled 22,600 tonnes.

*Please note that there was a lower response rate than normal to Defra’s survey. To compensate they have made greater use of the Food Standards Agency throughput data. This may impact on how within species numbers are split amongst their classifications; such as how sheep numbers are split amongst clean sheep and ewe & rams.
