Higher August throughputs support UK beef production

Defra’s latest production figures show that the UK produced 73,000 tonnes of beef and veal in August, 1% more than July but largely stable (+0.1%) versus August 2021.

A total of 162,000 prime cattle were processed during the month, up 0.4% from July, and up 1.5% from August a year ago. Cow slaughter totalled 53,500, up 7% from July, but down 1% compared to August 2021.

Prime cattle carcases averaged 342.4kg in August, 1.8kg (-0.5%) lighter than July and 3.3kg (-1%) lighter than August 2021. Cows averaged 302.1kg, 5.8kg (2%) lighter than July and 1.9kg (0.6%) lighter than a year ago.

For the year-to-date (Jan-Aug inclusive) UK beef production reached 590,500 tonnes, 0.4% (2,400 tonnes) less than the same period a year ago. Prime cattle slaughter was 0.8% (10,400 head) behind the same period in 2021 at 1.31 million head, while cow kill rose 2% year-on-year to 409,200 head (+8,000 head).
