Heatwave puts lamb prices on ice

Thursday, 13 August 2020

By Rebecca Wright

During the most recent week liveweight finished lamb prices have been relatively steady week-on-week. In the week ended 12 August, the GB liveweight NSL SQQ fell just 0.5p, to 214.92p/kg. The quote now stands 37p above year earlier levels. Total throughputs recovered from last week’s lull to stand at 129,164 head.

Industry reports suggest much of the demand is for the ‘meatier types’. The recent hot weather may have put prices under some pressure as finish levels of some began to take a hit. The rain received in the later half of this week is likely to be welcomed many, especially those who had been forced to begin supplementary feeding.

Deadweight prices reflected the previous week’s liveweight price decline. The GB deadweight NSL SQQ dropped 11p, to 469p/kg. Despite this fall the quote remains strong for the time of year.
