Good news expected for ammonia emissions

Thursday, 3 October 2024

We are on the brink of sharing new guidance regarding emission factors, and below, we share the latest update on our ammonia emissions project.

The UK’s farming industry is on the brink of important changes in response to EU legislation, with legal updates expected imminently.

The Environment Agency (EA) has completed its review of our work on emission factors – a project costing £250,000 and expected to save the industry £15m.

For the pig sector, ammonia reductions of approximately 30% for finishers and 50% for weaners are expected, without farmers needing to make any operational changes at all. However, two systems remain non-compliant, where applicants are able to self-evidence a site-specific emission factor at the permitting stage if needed.

The new nitrogen and phosphorus calculators and reporting tools will soon be available online ready for reporting being due to start from 1 Jan 2025, once we finalise the updated emission factors.
