GB prime cattle prices level off

In the week ending 27 November, GB deadweight prime cattle prices generally levelled off from the week before.

The overall all-prime average cattle price averaged 411.8p/kg, 0.2p lower than the week before. The measure is still 37p above the price for the same week a year ago, and 57p above the five-year average.

Overall, steer prices averaged 413.6p/kg, up 0.1p on the week. Heifers on the other hand lost 0.7p overall to average 410.9p/kg. Young bulls saw growth of 1.2p on the overall price to average 399.5p/kg for the week.

Prime cattle slaughter was estimated to be 31,400 head for the week. This was down slightly from the week previous (-100 head), but 10% below the same week a year ago.

For cull cows, the overall average price eased by a further 0.9p from the week before to 256.7p/kg. This is still 38p above the price for the same week a year ago. Estimated cow slaughter stood at 12,300 head for the week, down 3% from the week previous and down 4% from the same week a year ago.
