GB finished lamb prices hold strong

Thursday, 2 September 2021

By Bronwyn Magee

It was a relatively quiet week for GB finished lamb prices. In the week ending 1 September, the GB liveweight NSL SQQ fell 1.53p on the previous week to 237.14p/kg. This puts the measure 22p above the same week in 2020 and 52p higher than the five-year average.

Total throughput at GB auction marts fell 9% (9,900 head) on the previous week, estimated at 104,100 head. This is 11% (12,800 head) lower than the same week in 2020.

This week is Love Lamb week, which promotes lamb to consumers. GB retail lamb volumes and spend were below year-earlier levels in August, although this is compared back to the start of the pandemic. When compared to the same month two years ago, total lamb volumes are up 1.8%. The impact of this campaign on retail volumes is yet to be seen, but higher retail performance could offer further support to prices.

It was a relatively quiet week on the deadweight front as well. The GB deadweight NSL SQQ was virtually unchanged (-0.1p) at 530.5p/kg in the week ending 28 August. This puts the price at an 86p premium compared to the same week last year, and 110p above the five-year average.

Estimated kill for the week stood at 243,000 head. This is a 3.6% (8,300 head) lift on the previous week but still significantly lower than year-earlier levels, 9.7% (26,100 head) below the same week last year.

The cull ewe price for the week stood at £75.82/head, £1 lower than the week before.
