GB cattle prices soften for fifth week

The average GB deadweight price for prime cattle stood at 434.7p/kg in the week ending 6 August, down 3.6p/kg on last week, the fifth week in a row that overall prices have slipped. Within this average price, overall steers were back 3.6p to 435.8p/kg,  young bulls eased 3.3p to 428.3p/kg, and overall heifers dropped to 435.6p/kg, back 3.4p on the price achieved last week.

Overall cow prices saw further softening, standing at 350.6p/kg, 3.8p back on the price achieved the week before. Within this overall price, cows of -O4L spec held firm at 374.6p/kg, almost £1 above the five-year average.

Prime cattle slaughter stood at an estimated 30,200 head, down 3% from the previous week, and down 2% from the same week a year ago. Cull cow numbers held steady on last week and last year, at an estimated 10,100 head.
