GB cattle prices continue easing

In the week ending 30th July, overall cattle prices lost further ground.
The average GB deadweight price for prime cattle stood at 438.3p/kg, down 0.8p/kg on last week, closer to prices achieved in May. Within this average price, overall steers were back to 439.4p/kg, however R4L steers crept up 0.2p to 451p/kg, the first increase seen in four weeks. The average price for overall heifers fell 0.6p to 439p/kg, as did the price for young bulls, which dropped 1.3p to 431.6p/kg.
Cow prices saw further declines, losing 5p to average 354.4p/kg overall, closer to prices seen in April. Although, the price is still running at over 101p above the 5-year average, and 62p above year-ago levels. Cows of -O4L spec lost 1.8p week on week to average 374.6p/kg.
Prime cattle slaughter was down again for the second week in a row - estimated at 31,100 head - but in line with numbers for the same week last year, as well as the 5-year average. Cull cow numbers were up 11% on last week, at 10,100 head. This is 3% above numbers recorded for the same week a year ago.
