Forage for Knowledge is back for the 2025 grass-growing season
Friday, 4 April 2025
We are excited to announce that this year, we are teaming up with the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) and Farmers Guardian to bring you even more comprehensive and timely updates on grass growth and quality.
These collaborations allow us to expand our reach beyond our current 10,000 weekly subscribers, giving more farmers access to data that drives better decisions.
Through our work with AFBI, we are now able to include 7- to 14-day grass growth predictions, offering a forward-looking view to help with grazing and silage planning.
Farmers Guardian will play a key role in sharing this information across the wider farming community.
We will also share bi-weekly management notes and recommendations from Piers Badnell, Pasture to Profit Consultant. These practical insights will help you apply the data to your day-to-day decision-making with confidence and clarity.
What is Forage for Knowledge?
Our Forage for Knowledge newsletter delivers weekly, region-specific updates on grass growth and quality, supporting livestock producers across the UK in making smarter grassland and nutrition decisions.
It is designed to help you:
- Maximise forage yield
- Optimise livestock nutrition
- Benchmark performance
- Improve overall farm profitability
How is the data collected?
Grass growth and quality data is sourced from a network of farms across England, Scotland and Wales. Each farm records grass growth and quality conditions weekly.
This data is analysed and compiled into easy-to-digest reports.
Now, alongside weekly figures, you will also receive expert commentary every two weeks from Piers Badnell, who will provide context, grazing recommendations and practical advice tailored to UK conditions.
Thanks to our partnership with AFBI, we now include predictive modelling, showing expected growth over the next 7 to 14 days – perfect for planning ahead.
How should farmers use the figures?
Use Forage for Knowledge to:
- Optimise livestock nutrition: Match forage quality with livestock needs for better performance
- Maximise forage yield: Time grazing and cutting based on growth trends.
- Boost profitability: One extra tonne of dry matter (DM) per hectare is worth approx. £334/year to dairy farms and £204/year to beef farms
- Benchmark performance: Compare your results regionally to find areas for improvement
- Apply expert guidance: Use Piers Badnell’s bi-weekly notes to tailor your grassland management
