Danish pig herd reaches 22 year low

Friday, 18 November 2022

The latest census on 1 October showed the Danish pig population at 11.9 million head, a decline of 277,000 head (2.3%) from the last survey in July, and a fall of 1.3 million head (9.9%) year on year. This is the smallest pig herd recorded on the census since 1 April 2000.

Increased input costs are putting pressure on farmer margins and look set to remain so for the foreseeable future. EU pig prices had seen sharp rises earlier in the year but have recently shown more muted movement. Inflation on consumer prices is also likely to impact on demand. With all this in mind, the European Commission forecasts pig production on the continent to fall 5% by the end of the year and continue to decrease in 2023, hampered also by impacts of ASF. Therefore, it is unlikely we will see a quick recovery in pig population figures.
