Cull ewe prices remain subdued

During recent weeks finished lamb prices have been strong for the time of year, but the same can’t be said for cull ewe prices. Cull ewe prices do often reflect trends within the finished lamb market. However, currently, the finished price is being driven by a lack of lamb imports from New Zealand and the UK imports very little mutton. This means that the domestic mutton market is by far the dominant factor influencing cull ewe prices. Domestic demand for mutton did not receive its usual support during Ramadan and Eid-al-Fitr due to the COVID-19 regulations in force at the time.

Demand for cull ewes is likely to receive some support in the coming weeks as Eid-al-Adha approaches. Somewhat compensating this additional demand though, are reports of plenty of ewes being available for kill.
