Cull cow prices rise ahead of bank holiday weekend

For the week ending 28 May, average prime cattle prices dropped 0.5p to 438.2p/kg, still 44p above the same time last year. Prices for steers and heifers remained steady on the week previous, however the price of young bulls fell by 1.6p/kg in the week.
Estimated slaughter stood at 35,300 head, an increase of 800 head from the previous week and up 13% on the 5-year average for the time of year.

Cull cow prices rose by 2.7p this week to 362.1p/kg, a new record high, just in time for the Jubilee bank holiday weekend to kick off BBQ season. Estimated cull cow slaughter stood at 9,200 head, up only 100 head on the previous week, in line with the 5-year average for the time of year.
