Another successful week for GB lamb prices
Thursday, 25 February 2021
By Bronwyn Magee
In the week ending 24 February, the liveweight OSL SQQ dropped back slightly on the previous week by just under 2p, to average 277.88p/kg. Prices continue to trend well above those achieved last year, 43p higher than the same week in 2019, and 78p above the five-year average.
Throughputs at British auction markets lifted on the previous week, up 4,700 head (5%), totalling 102,800 head. However, numbers held steady on last year, up just 400 head when compared to the same week in 2019.
Cull ewes for the week averaged £80.63/head, up a marginal 44p from the previous week.
Deadweight prices continued to climb in the latest week. In the week ending 20 February, the deadweight OSL SQQ lifted just under 16p to average 609.10p/kg. Prices are now 160p above the five-year average, and 77p higher than the same week last year. The price is now above the high seen in April 2018, and the market is doubtless wary, should any cracks in demand start to appear.
Estimated slaughter for the week totalled 196,500 head, up 2% (4,400 head) when compared to same week last year but dropping back 1,500 head (1%) on the previous week.
