Annual UK lamb kill rises again in May

Tuesday, 21 June 2022

According to the latest Defra data, the UK produced 21,300 tonnes of sheep meat in May, an increase of 12% (2,300 tonnes) year-on-year.

UK lamb kill for May totalled 924,000 head, an increase of 11% (93,000 head) compared to 2021 and up 4% on 2020. With average carcase weights at 20.4kg/head, up 400g from the same time last year, increased slaughter is the main driver for the year-on-year production increase.

Ewe kill totalled 82,600 head in May, a 5% (3,900 head) increase from last year.

Year to date clean sheep slaughter now stands at 4.74 million head, 11% more than last year. Production is 122,500 tonnes 13% more than at the same point last year. There are some questions about last year's official data, which may understate production, particularly in the second half.
