Halal – Dispelling the myths and exploring the market (Ulverston)
Join AHDB at Ulverston Auction Mart for an event which aims to help you understand more about the Halal market and its growing importance to the lamb sector. Our line-up of speakers will be as follows:
Grace Randall will take us through how lamb is performing in retail and foodservice and what is being done to market your product. Grace works in the retail insight team at AHDB and has several years’ experience analysing consumer behaviour and shopping habits having previously worked in both the consumer insights and data and analysis teams. Before joining AHDB she studied Mathematics at the University of York. Her current role at AHDB focuses on understanding the performance and trends in retail and foodservice markets and communicating opportunities for AHDB levy payers.
Dr Awal Fuseini will talk about what Halal means along with how and why lamb is such an important part of the Muslim communities’ dietary requirements. He will dispel some of the myths around how the sector operates, giving confidence to farmers who want to capitalise on this growing market. Awal works closely with levy payers and key stakeholders in the Halal sector to create a better understanding of the requirements of Halal meat production. His role involves introducing various initiatives aimed at promoting English beef and lamb as versatile and convenient products to Halal consumers.
Dr Gulam Khan will give an insight into how the Muslim communities perceive lamb production in England and how we can better market lambs throughout different times of the Muslim year.
Martin Eccles will cut a lamb to Halal specification demonstrating what the Halal market requires. Martin is a butcher with 35 years’ experience and has a strong understanding across all species to improve carcase utilisation, knowledge transfer and consumer satisfaction. Working alongside multiple retailers, beef, lamb and pork processors, catering butchers and retail butchers, Martin assists in new product development (NPD) and adding value to the carcase.
A light supper and refreshments will be served so please advise us of any special dietary requirements.
