Thursday, 17 March 2022
Imports
In January 2022 the UK imported 20,900 tonnes of fresh and frozen beef, according to the latest HMRC data. This is up 45% from a year ago when imports sat at 14,400 tonnes and is 11% above the 5-year average. Although imports are down 2,800 tonnes (12%) from December this follows the seasonal trend. The average value of imported product has increased 21% year-on-year to £4,800/tonne in January.
Exports
The UK exported 7,200 tonnes of fresh and frozen beef in January, a decrease of 31% (3,300 tonnes) from December. This is driven by reduced quantities going to Ireland and France, each receiving nearly 1,000 tonnes less. Year on year, exports in January 2022 are up 55%, demonstrating that some post Brexit difficulties have been overcome, however export volumes are 17% below the 5-year average. The average value of exported product has increased 18% year-on-year to £3,700/tonne in January.
