Sheep meat trade volumes subdued in October

Wednesday, 15 December 2021

By Rebecca Wright

Continuing the trend recorded throughout 2021, UK fresh and frozen sheep meat exports were down 12% on-the-year during October, to 7,000 tonnes according to HMRC data. Volumes to the EU declined almost 4%, to 6,700 tonnes. Volumes available for export have been challenged this year, by both increased trade friction between the UK and EU post-Brexit and lower UK production. In the year to October, exports declined 22%, to 54,900 tonnes. Volumes are well below historic averages.

Also during October, UK fresh and frozen sheep meat imports dropped by over a third year-on-year, to 2,200 tonnes. Volumes from New Zealand dropped by almost half, to 900 tonnes. This means, in the year to October imports totalled 40,000 tonnes, down 16%. Volumes from New Zealand are likely to remain subdued for at least the coming year.
