Prime cattle prices remain well supported, up on previous week

In the week ending 27 February, the GB all prime average cattle price stood at 375.7p/kg, up 2.5p on the week before. The measure is now 41p/kg above the price achieved in the same week last year.

Estimated throughput for the week totalled 34,300 head. This is unchanged on the week before but still up on the same week last year by 1,000 head.

There were price increases across all of the major prime categories this week, with young bulls showing the largest week-on-week rise. Prices are remaining supported with tight supply remaining across the UK.

GB deadweight prime cattle price movements and week-on-week changes: (w/e 27 February)

  • Steers (overall): 376.8p/kg up 2.5p
  • Steers (R4L): 385.3p/kg up 2.6p
  • Heifers (overall): 376.0p/kg up 1.9p
  • Young bulls (overall): 358.0p/kg up 5.1p

Cull cow prices have also made gains on the previous week, with prices up 4.3p on the week before to average 257.6p/kg for the week ending 27 February. This now puts the cull cow prices up 21.6p on the same week last year. Estimated cull cow throughput was down marginally by 200 head on the previous week to total 10,000 head.
