Prime cattle prices fall back

In the week ending 12 December, the GB all prime average stood at 366.8p/kg, down just over 4p on the week before. Although prices fell back on the week, the measure is still nearly 40p above the price achieved for the same week last year, and 22p above the 5-year average.
Estimated slaughter for the week totalled 35,100 head, up on the previous week by a marginal 700 head (2%). Estimated throughput was almost 6% higher than that seen in the same week last year.
Prices declined across all the prime categories, with steers meeting the R4L specification dropping back by the largest week-on-week decrease.
- Steers (overall): 367.8p/kg, down 4.6p
- Steers (R4L): 379.0p/kg, down 5.5p
- Heifers (overall): 367.8p/kg, down 3.3p
- Young bulls (overall): 348.7p/kg, down 2.1p
Cull cow prices lifted slightly on the week, up 1.2p to average 221.7p/kg in the week ending 12 December. This measure is currently just under 19p above the price achieved for the same week last year, and 18p above the 5-year average.
Cow throughout for the week fell marginally, down 100 head on the week before to an estimated 12,300 head. Estimated slaughter was also down on the year, by 11% (1,500 head).
