Pig prices increase at the end of February

In the week ending 26 February the EU-spec SPP rose slightly by 0.57p to 138.06p/kg, which is only 0.73p below where it was for the same time last year. The European market is beginning to show some new buds of Spring, with prices there having made some small steps upwards despite the mountain of pork supplies on the market.
GB estimated slaughter, increased this week to 188,700 head, up 3.6% (6,600 head) on last week. This up 0.2% for the same time last year and 8.5% above the 5-year average. Carcase weights dropped slightly to 94.91kg, but are still sitting almost 5kg heavier than 2021.
The EU-spec APP stood at 143.92p/kg in the week ending 19 February, an increase of 0.92p and up 1.72p for the same period in 2021. The gap between the APP and the SPP has now widened to 6.43p.
