June milk production 2% behind last year

Wednesday, 20 July 2022

GB milk production for June totalled 1,047 million litres, a 2% drop in production in comparison to June 2021.

Production fell from May deliveries by 8%, in line with the seasonally expected drop in production. June daily deliveries started the month at 35.62 m litres/day and ended at 34.12 m litres/day. Our updated production forecast started from mid-June and the rolling 7-day average was in line with it for the rest of the month.

Season to date (April-June) production has reached 3,283 million litres, some 59 million litres, or 2%, below production levels attained by the same point last year. High input costs over the last 12 months have put pressure on yields, as milk prices were slow to respond to the rapid inflation of input costs.

Looking forward, daily delivery figures available to 9th July show some flattening in daily milk production. However, given the extreme heat Great Britain has been experiencing through mid-July, it is likely that an accelerated drop in daily milk production will be seen once the data is in.
