GB milk production: September deliveries down slightly on the year

Wednesday, 11 October 2023

In September GB milk deliveries totalled 962 million litres, a 14 million litre (1.4%) decrease compared to the same month last year, with average daily deliveries sat at 32.05 million litres per day. Production for the milk season to date (Apr–Sep) amounts to 6,271 million litres, an increase of 0.3% (17.5 million litres) versus the same period in the 2022/23 season.

Production in September sat slightly behind the recently released milk forecast that estimated 970 million litres for the month. The recent forum discussed expectations that production will continue to dwindle steadily over the coming months, due to a much lower milk price and still eye-wateringly expensive input costs.

AHDB’s Forage for Knowledge reported good grass growth in September, as we saw high levels of both sunshine and rainfall, which will have likely supported milk yields. Grass growth was consistently above levels measured in both September 2022 and the average figures for 2017–2021.

Deliveries data was disrupted in the penultimate week of the month due to the announced liquidation of a large haulier. However, this impact appears confined to a single day, with collections quickly bouncing back as alternative arrangements were swiftly put into place.
