GB milk production: November production down compared to highs of 2022

Monday, 11 December 2023

GB milk deliveries totalled 977 million litres in November, down nearly 29 million litres (2.8%) compared to last year. Average daily deliveries were 32.56 million litres. This year’s milk season (April-Nov) production totals 8,254 million litres, a decrease of 38 million litres compared to the same period of 2022.

It is important to remember that November 2022 was a period of very high milk prices, moving up towards the peak seen in December 2022. In contrast, this year we have seen much weaker prices and challenging conditions in terms of both weather and sustained high input costs.

Following on from the storms in October, we saw a very wet beginning to November. The Met Office reported average temperatures, however, cold snaps brought frosts across the North and East of the country towards the end of the month. This turning weather will have taken cows off the grass and into housing where producers are likely to be increasingly exposed to costs, such as hay and straw which is up on the year.

This combination of factors is likely to be contributing to smaller production volumes as producers opt not to push cows through the winter. The December forecast predicts that we may see further production volume reductions as the winter progresses.
