GB lamb prices tick up
Thursday, 22 July 2021
In the week ending 21 July, the GB average NSL SQQ rose by 9.4p on the week before to average 260.7p/kg. This puts the measure up 44p on the price for the same week a year ago, and up 70p on the five-year average.
The Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha began on 20 July, and runs until tomorrow (23 July). Prices saw largest gains at the beginning of the week, potentially with the last few festival orders being placed.
Total lamb throughputs at British auction marts were estimated to be 103,000 head, 17% lower than the week before and 28% lower than the same week a year ago.
The story was also positive on the deadweight front. In the week ending 17 July, the GB average NSL SQQ rose by 2.1p on the week to 548.5p/kg. This was 69p above the price for the same week a year ago, and 106p above the five-year average, also likely buoyed by the upcoming festival.
Clean sheep slaughter at GB abattoirs was estimated to be 268,300 head for the week, up 16% on the week before and up 14% on the same week a year ago. Auction numbers also saw an uptick for the same period.
For the year to date, total estimated clean sheep kill stands at 5.7 million head, 8% lower than the same period in 2020.
Cull ewe prices averaged £86.50/head liveweight in the week ending 21 July, up £3.15 on the week before. Numbers returned to more normal levels in the latest week, having being elevated in the weeks previous, likely due to upcoming festival demand.
