GB lamb prices spring up

Thursday, 15 April 2021

In the week ending 14 April, the GB liveweight OSL price moved up again, by another 4.7p to average 312.3p/kg. This puts the price 96p above the price achieved in the same week last year, and over £1 above the five-year average for the week.

The GB liveweight NSL price averaged 346.0p/kg, down 14.8p on the week before, but up 82.0p on the same week a year ago. Reports suggest that trade for spring lambs has eased somewhat following Easter.

Total throughputs of OSL and NSL lambs at GB auction marts were estimated at 117,900 head for the week, up 22% from the week before and up 48% from the same week a year ago. This is partially due to a return to full trading after Easter. An estimated 9,000 new season lambs came through GB marts in the week, while hoggets made up 92% of throughputs.

Cull ewes averaged £105.74/head, down £4.32 on the week.

Deadweight prices also experienced growth in the week ending 10 April, where the GB OSL price jumped by 26.7p on the week to average 646.0p/kg. Estimated throughputs at GB abattoirs totalled 152,400 head, down 7% on the week before and down 27% on the same week a year ago. The week ending 10 April still included a bank holiday Monday, potentially explaining some of the fall.

The Muslim holy month of Ramadan began on Tuesday 13th, likely offering support to domestic sales and those for export. However, if typical gatherings and celebrations are not allowed to happen under COVID-19 restrictions, then it is plausible that lamb demand could be weaker than usual. Although, Ramadan 2020 was observed under full lockdown, and so we may see stronger sales than last year due to lighter restrictions. GB retail sales of lamb are still strong.
