French pigs buck the trend in EU sow prices

Tuesday, 12 July 2022

The price of sows in key EU member states have been steadily dropping over the past two months, with the exception of France. After peaking in April and May, prices in Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands have dropped €0.37, €0.19 and €0.35 per kilo respectively. Conversely, prices in France have been steady with some growth starting to show in recent weeks. UK prices normally track European prices, although at a slightly lower level, due to most sow carcases being exported. As in the UK, producers in the EU are struggling with high costs of production and negative margins, challenging profitability and future production.

Average prices for week ending 3 July are:

  • Germany €1.15/kg
  • Denmark €1.02/kg
  • Netherlands €1.24/kg
  • France €1.05/kg
