Floods in Australia not expected to dampen production

Wednesday, 31 March 2021

The recent wet weather in Australia isn’t expected to impact overall milk production in the country.

There have been shocking scenes of livestock trapped in floodwater and the impact on individual farmers will be devastating. However, the issues have been mainly in the North Coast region of New South Wales (NSW), where milk production is put at about 300m litres per year - just 3% of the nation’s total.

While some areas have suffered significant flooding and loss of animals, the wet weather is actually helping grazing conditions in other parts. High rainfall in areas not impacted by extreme flooding will benefit from improved pasture growth, yields and milk production. This will help offset any losses from the flooded regions.

It should also be noted that March is the beginning of Australia’s trough milk producing period, again reducing the impact of losses.
