EU sheep meat production higher in 2021

Following lower volumes of sheep meat production in the EU-27 during 2020, sheep meat production and throughputs are beginning to rise.

Sheep meat production in the EU-27 totalled 100,800 tonnes during Q1 2021, up 8% year-on-year. Higher slaughterings in Italy, France and Spain have driven this increase.

Total throughputs during Q1 totalled 6.95M head, a 9% (580,000 head) increase.

Spain and France continue to be the largest producers inside the EU-27, accounting for 28% and 21% of total production respectively. During Q1, Spain produced 28,200 tonnes, an increase of 12% year on year. France recorded an increase of 20%, with production totalling 21,500 tonnes.

Despite recent increases in production, European farmgate lamb prices remain high. Higher prices on the continent may be encouraging farmers to send more lambs and have been lending support to prices here.
