Environmental permitting changes for 2024
Thursday, 8 February 2024
Below, we share some of the changes to Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR) that the Environment Agency (EA) is introducing this year.
Ammonia emission factor review
The EA commissioned a project to update their ammonia emission factors; these are used by permitted pig units to calculate their emissions. The updated suite of emission factors will be published soon, following a review and internal consultation.

Climate change adaptation
All permitted farms must produce a climate change risk assessment by 31 March 2024.
You will find a risk assessment template, including links to the EA guidance, in our online knowledge library.
Nitrogen and phosphorus reporting
The reporting requirement will be extended to all permitted farms, with retrospective reporting for the 2024 calendar year being needed from January 2025. Thereafter, this will be an annual reporting requirement.
The EA will be sharing details soon about a new mass balance calculator to help farmers report annual livestock nitrogen and phosphorus excretion levels.
