December GB milk production still behind 2020/21 season

GB milk production provisionally totalled 1,014 million litres in December 2021 based on the latest daily deliveries data. This is 3.6% down from December 2020 but up 3.8% from November 2021. Although the month on month increase follows seasonal patterns, this year’s increase is below the average for the last 2 years of over 4%.

Average daily deliveries for December were 32.7m litres/day, down from 33.9m litres/day the previous year. Overall production in the current season (April – December) is running at 1.2% below that of 2020/21.

Lower production has continued to support price increases on the wholesale markets as well as in farmgate milk prices. Higher prices usually encourage an increase in production, although the continued pressure of high input costs on farmer margins will likely limit this. This is reflected in our latest milk production forecast.
