In what appears to be a reversal of the trends seen in recent weeks, deadweight cow prices levelled out in the week ending 18 April, while prime prices continued to fall.

The all prime GB average price fell 4.3p on the week, to 323.8p/kg. Total throughputs for the week were estimated at 27,000 head*, down 1,600 on the week, which included a bank holiday.

Weekly prime price movements were as follows:

  • Steers overall fell 6p to average 323.7p/kg
  • R4L steers fell 4.9p to average 338p/kg
  • Heifers overall fell 2.7p to average 326p/kg
  • R4L heifers fell 5.5p to average 335.9p/kg
  • Young bulls overall rose 0.6p to average 309.2p/kg

Prices continue to be influenced by foodservice closures, carcase value imbalance and low hide prices.

Meanwhile, cull cow prices stabilised, rising by 0.1p to average 209.4p/kg. Estimated slaughter rose by 1,300 head on the week to 8,700 head*.

*estimated slaughter figures should be treated with caution, as more animals than usual may have been sold deadweight, given the temporary disruption to some live markets.
