Deadweight lamb prices ease

Wednesday, 23 December 2020

By Charlie Reeve

Deadweight lamb prices have dropped back marginally during the last week. For the week ending 19 December, the average GB NSL SQQ price decreased by 3p on the previous week to 479.1p/kg. The deadweight lamb price is still 49p above the same week last year, and 81p above the five-year-average.

Total estimated throughput for abattoirs have remained high. Estimated throughput was 307,200 head, an increase of 6,900 head on the previous week. This was 6.3% higher than a year earlier, and marks the first year on year increase in the weekly in over two months.

Since the weekend, there have been major disruptions to exports through France. Measures have been put in place to re-open the border today (23 Dec). Throughputs have dropped significantly both at auction markets and abattoirs, due to heavily reduced demand from suppliers to export markets. Auction market prices have dropped back slightly due to this on Monday, although a major reduction in numbers of lambs made available has helped to limit this decrease. The true extent this has impacted on trade flows will be clearer when new deadweight and auction market data becomes available in the New Year.
